The protests in Peru already leave 23 dead after adding 14 since the declaration of the state of emergency

MADRID, 18 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Peruvian authorities have updated on the afternoon of this Saturday the total balance of deaths after the demonstrations that have broken out in Peru after the impeachment and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo, bringing the total number of deaths to 23.

The Lima Province Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) has announced the death of one more person due to clashes at the Ayacucho airport between protesters, who were trying to take the terminal, against the Peruvian Armed Forces.

"It is reported that, despite all the efforts of the health personnel and doctors of the Ayacucho Regional Hospital, one of the injured died in the early hours of today," the Diresa said in a statement, according to the RPP radio station. .

In this way, the total balance of deaths in Peru has increased to 23, of which 14 have occurred after the emergency declaration decreed by the Government of Peru last Thursday.

The latest deaths take place amid strong protests taking place across Peru following the ouster and arrest of former President Castillo on December 7. The demonstrators ask President Dina Boluarte for the dissolution of Congress and the calling of new general elections.

The Peruvian government has decreed a state of emergency at the national level for a period of 30 days as a response to the protests in support of Castillo. Likewise, the Executive has declared an emergency in the National Road Network, allowing the Army to take to the streets in an effort to protect the country's strategic points.
