The Prosecutor's Office of Peru releases nearly 200 people detained after the operation of the University of San Marcos

MADRID, 23 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Peruvian Prosecutor's Office has ordered the release of 192 people who were detained this weekend during the police operation at the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM), in Lima.

"Once the proceedings at the police headquarters have been completed and the corresponding police report has been received, the provincial criminal prosecutor has ordered the release of 192 people, leaving one person detained for having a request," reads a statement.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has indicated that preliminary proceedings have been ordered for the alleged commission of crimes against property --aggravated usurpation and damages-- to the detriment of the aforementioned university.

Hours before, the Ombudsman's Office had asked to "resolve in a timely manner (the) habeas corpus of the people detained at the UNMSM, especially women, older adults and others in vulnerable situations."

Around 400 police officers with tanks and the support of special forces stormed the university located in the capital of the country, without complying with the legal procedures for arrests.

The National Coordinator for Human Rights (CNDDHH) had demanded that the Police clarify the legal situation of those detained in the intervention at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. "Nothing justifies that people continue to be detained at Police facilities," she pointed out.

Organizations such as Amnesty International have condemned the "disproportionate use of force" and respect for Human Rights. "The state of emergency does not suspend due process. Detainees must have access to their defense at all times and have interpreters if they need it. The prohibition of solitary confinement and cruel and inhuman treatment is maintained," the international organization recalled.
