The Prosecutor's Office of Peru files a constitutional complaint against Castillo for crimes of rebellion and conspiracy

The Attorney General of Peru, Patricia Benavides, has filed a constitutional complaint against the former president of the country Pedro Castillo before the Congress of the Republic on Monday for the alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy.

The complaint reaches not only Castillo, but also the former Prime Minister, Betssy Chávez; her predecessor in office, Aníbal Torres; the former Minister of the Interior, Willy Huerta, and his Foreign Trade counterpart, Roberto Sánchez, as reported by the Peruvian radio station RPP.

The document presented by Benavides indicates Castillo as the "alleged co-perpetrator" of a crime against the powers of the State and the constitutional order in the form of rebellion, as well as another crime against the Public Administration for abuse of authority and disturbance of public peace.

In the case of Chávez, Huerta and Sánchez, the nation's prosecutor points out her as the alleged co-perpetrator of the crime against the powers of the State and the constitutional order in the form of rebellion and conspiracy.

According to the Peruvian Criminal Code, former President Castillo could be sentenced to between ten and 20 years in prison, as reported by the Andina news agency.

The Congress of the Republic has withdrawn this Monday the special jurisdiction of former President Castillo, thus lifting the prerogative of political impeachment that the Andean president had enjoyed until now.

Castillo announced last Wednesday the dissolution of Parliament - to avoid a motion of no confidence against him - and the implementation of an emergency government. The measures did not obtain the necessary support to move forward and, finally, the president ended up dismissed and arrested by the Prosecutor's Office.

After this episode, what until now had been his 'number two', Dina Boluarte, was named president of Peru. This decision has aroused discomfort among certain sectors of the population, who have staged demonstrations against it.
