The president of South Korea describes as "unacceptable" the infiltration of North Korean drones into the national territory

MADRID, 29 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol warned on Wednesday that North Korean drone infiltration into South Korean territory is "completely unacceptable," urging Pyongyang to realize that its provocations will have "harsh consequences." ".

For Yoon, it is vital that South Korea prepares for war "with overwhelming superiority" as a way to achieve peace, stressing the importance of the country's Army becoming "a strong and unwavering army that scares and generates a firm trust in people", according to the Yonhap news agency.

That is why the president has ordered a reexamination of the general response system for all flying objects that invade South Korean airspace, after this happened with five North Korean drones last Tuesday.

Previously, Yoon had rebuked his Defense Minister Lee Jong Sup for the North Korean drone raid on South Korean territory, all after the country's military failed to shoot down the aircraft at first.

"How can there be no one preparing against North Korean drone attacks? There have been many similar incidents in the past, so what have you been doing until now?" Yoon snapped at Lee during a meeting on Tuesday, as detailed to the aforementioned agency by a government official.

"Are you saying that there was no proper training and that you did nothing?" the South Korean president added during the meeting.

According to information collected by Yonhap, South Korean forces sent drones to the border area in response, some of which entered North Korean territory to carry out surveillance operations, including photographs of "key enemy military installations."

The event is the first of its kind since 2017, although between 2014 and 2017 Seoul denounced numerous drone overflight operations by North Korea and already warned of the military threat posed by these devices, both to carry out attacks and in operations espionage.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula after Pyongyang's latest ballistic missile fire, including two short-range missiles launched earlier in the day on Friday.

The US and South Korean authorities agreed last week to conduct "realistic" joint military exercises, especially in the face of missile or nuclear attack scenarios by North Korea. The South Korean Ministry of Defense stressed that the parties also plan to expand their joint exercises for next year after a meeting between senior defense officials from both countries.
