The president of Peru proposes early elections for April 2024

Boluarte declares a state of emergency "in areas of high conflict"

The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, announced on Sunday night that she will present a bill to advance elections to April 2024 in response to the social protests that are taking place in various areas of the country against her government.

"Interpreting the will of the citizenry in the broadest possible way, I have decided to take the initiative to reach an agreement with the Congress of the Republic to advance the General Elections to April 2024," the president declared in a speech to the nation with reason for the violent demonstrations this weekend that have so far left two dead and several dozen injured.

Thus, the Peruvian president, who took office when she was then vice president after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo as established in the country's Constitution, explained that "in the next few days" she will send a bill to Congress to make it " agreed with the political forces represented in Parliament".

Boluarte has indicated that the approval of this law implies constitutional reforms, while his cabinet "will also promote the agreement in the Congress of the Republic of a law for the Reform of the Political System."

"I call on all political forces, from the regions and provinces, the authorities, civil society and the Peruvian people to participate in this process so that a wave of democratic will and national responsibility guides and guides us," he added after criticizing the escalation of political confrontation.

Thus, he has maintained that these confrontations - which this Sunday forced the cancellation of the plenary session of Congress due to brawls between deputies - are not "healthy for the country, nor for the economy, nor for fighting poverty."

The Peruvian president, due to the escalation of tensions in the protests in her homeland, has conveyed her condolences during her message to the nation.

"I have given the instructions so that control of internal order can be peacefully recovered without affecting the fundamental rights of citizens. I regret the death of our compatriots from Andahuaylas, Apurímac. I express my heartfelt condolences to their relatives," he said.

Boluarte has communicated that its Executive has declared a state of emergency in three regions of the country: Ica, Arequipa and Apurímac, where on Sunday the death of a minor under 15 years of age and an 18-year-old was reported. The Ministry of Health has also reported that it has ordered immediate measures for one of the injuries, which has received a pellet in the eye.

"I announce the declaration of a state of emergency in areas of high social conflict. I have given instructions for the peaceful recovery of control of internal order, without affecting the fundamental rights of citizens," Boluarte asserted.
