The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, does not rule out calling elections

MADRID, 10 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, said this Saturday that despite the fact that she swore to hold office until 2026, "if society and the situation warrant it," they will advance the general elections.

The former vice president has not ruled out calling a new appointment at the polls, after protests have spread throughout the country demanding that Congress be closed and new representatives be appointed in the House and a new head of state be voted on.

"When the position was sworn in two days ago, it was held until 2026; however, if society and the situation warrant it, we will advance the elections," he said in statements to the press reported by 'La República'.

Boluarte has also made reference to former President Pedro Castillo, who is in custody accused of the crimes of rebellion and conspiracy for dissolving Congress and calling elections before a vacancy motion filed against him.

"I think that raising the question of confidence has been the breaking point. I am very sorry that this unexpected situation has occurred. Nobody expected it until last week, in the Council of Ministers," he assured.
