The Police and the Army of Peru will unblock the roads affected by the protests against the Government

MADRID, 27 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Peruvian Ministries of the Interior and Defense have issued a joint statement on Thursday in which they have reported that the Peruvian Police, together with the support of the Armed Forces, will unblock the roads of the National Road Network located in state of emergency due to anti-government protests.

"We call on those who persist in these illegal measures to desist from it, allow the peaceful unblocking of the roads and avoid confrontations with the security forces, which will act in defense of legality," read the letter, where both ministries They cite various articles of the Peruvian Magna Carta, as reported by the RPP radio station.

The Interior and Defense portfolios have recalled that the road blockade is "an illegal act against the freedom of movement of people" and that, in addition, the country's Penal Code penalizes as a crime of extortion those who "with violence or threat take premises, obstruct roads, impede free movement or disturb the normal functioning of public services".

They have also indicated that to date ten Peruvians have lost their lives as a result of the roadblocks, among them a newborn whose mother could not receive timely medical attention in the La Libertad region, a newborn in the Puno region and a one-year-old boy in Cuzco.

"The right to protest does not authorize the obstruction of roads, much less can it overlap with the right to life of those people who need to be transferred to receive delicate treatments such as cancer or who need oxygen and medicine to reach their regions to continue living", they have riveted in the statement.

Peru is submerged in a deep political crisis born after the dismissal by Congress of former President Pedro Castillo, who announced on December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of an emergency government.

After the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people have come out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent call for presidential elections. Since then, more than 60 people have lost their lives in riots between protesters and security forces.
