The Mexican Foreign Minister affirms that his country is suffering from "a weapons pandemic"

MADRID, 4 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, stated this Thursday that his country is suffering from a "weapons pandemic" and has described as "essential" the control of traffic from other states to Mexico.

During his speech at an international conference on the business of arms trafficking to Mexico, Ebrard showed a map of the country detailing the main municipalities in which weapons have been seized since 2020 and highlighting those that border with the United States, where there is a higher incidence.

"Our entire country has a pandemic of weapons with different degrees of intensity," said the head of Mexican diplomacy, noting that in relation to the United States he has put on the table reforming the 'quid pro quo' in security matters.

"Violence cannot be reduced with the current volume of arms trafficking we have," Ebrad added during his speech, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to government data, Mexico is the fifth country with the most unregistered firearms in the world. In addition, the conversations on the issues of violence with weapons, arms trafficking and the responsibility of arms companies are "still incipient" in the public service, education and the media.

For this reason, the Mexican Executive intends to "produce" knowledge and design public policies to combat violence with firearms, as detailed by Mexican diplomacy.
