The Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation of Peru has decreed this Thursday 18 months of preventive detention against former President Pedro Castillo while he is investigated for the alleged commission of crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and disturbance of public tranquility.

Thus, the Peruvian Justice has issued a favorable resolution on the request of the Prosecutor's Office to detain the ex-president preventively for a period of 18 months, all this after finding the accusations that could imply for Castillo a sentence of more than four years, as reported by the agency itself in a statement.

In addition, the decision is also based on the possibility of danger of flight from the country by Castillo, who has requested political asylum before the Mexican ambassador in Peru, according to what Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador explained in a press conference.

Meanwhile, former Peruvian Prime Minister Aníbal Torres, one of Castillo's main supporters, must appear periodically with certain restrictions and rules of conduct, since he is being investigated in the same case.

The preventive detention decreed by the Peruvian Judiciary takes place after Castillo announced the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of an emergency government on December 7, events after which he was dismissed by Congress and later arrested by security forces. Peruvian security.

Since then, he has been detained at the Special Operations Directorate (Diroes) of the Peruvian National Police, on the outskirts of Lima. Now it must be decided which prison the former president will enter.
