The EU invites Zelensky to Brussels for a summit in February

BRUSELAS, 22 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The European Union has convened a summit with Ukraine for early February to which President Volodimir Zelensky is invited in person, who this week chose the United States for his first trip abroad since Russia began its military offensive almost ten months ago.

The meeting, scheduled for February 3, will not be at the level of leaders, but the EU will be represented by the presidents of the Council and the Commission, Charles Michel and Ursula Von der Leyen, according to community sources who have confirmed the "invitation " to Zelensky to "visit" Brussels.

The EU's External Action Service on Wednesday downplayed the fact that Zelensky had traveled to Washington and not Brussels, saying the two powers go hand in hand when it comes to international efforts to support Ukraine against Russia.

The Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, told Europa Press that Zelensky does not need to travel to the Member States "because the EU goes to him regularly and repeatedly." "Almost all the presidents, prime ministers and many ministers of the EU member states, as well as the representatives of the European institutions have been frequently in Ukraine and the EU is present in Ukraine every day," he said.
