The Brazilian Prosecutor's Office denounces 139 more people for participating in the assault on democratic institutions

The Brazilian Prosecutor's Office has denounced 139 more people for their participation in the assault on the country's democratic institutions on January 8, so that at the moment there are more than 800 people denounced.

The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) has reported this Tuesday that it has sent complaints to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) against 137 people who were detained inside the Planalto Palace --headquarters of the Brazilian Government--, while two others were arrested in the Plaza de los Tres Poderes when they were transporting materials to produce homemade explosives.

The defendants are accused of association to commit armed crimes, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d'état, qualified damages against national assets, deterioration of cataloged assets, among others, according to a statement from the Prosecutor's Office.

"(Each defendant) actively participated and competed with the other agents for the destruction of the furniture that was there. They all shouted slogans demonstrating their intention to overthrow the legitimately constituted government," reads the letter sent to the court.

Likewise, the ministerial portfolio indicates that the objective was "to execute a military government, prevent the exercise of Constitutional Powers and depose the legitimately constituted government that had taken office on January 1, 2023."

The Public Ministry has detailed that up to now 835 people have been denounced, 645 of them as instigators, since they would not have participated directly in the invasion and vandalism of the properties; while 189 would have been "responsible for direct acts of invasion, vandalism and depredation." In addition, a public official has also been arrested in connection with the events, which took place on Sunday, January 8, barely a week after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office.
