Steve Bannon sentenced to four months in jail for contempt

Steve Bannon, who was an ideological adviser to former United States President Donald Trump, was sentenced this Friday by a court in Washington D.C. four months in jail and a $6,500 fine for contempt, reports CNN.

However, the court led by Justice Carl Nichols has made it clear that Bannon will in no way enter jail until the conclusion of any appeal proceedings that his legal team plans to present.

Bannon was convicted this summer of refusing to comply with a subpoena before a congressional committee investigating the storming of the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The statement of charges of the Prosecutor's Office pointed out Bannon for "exacerbating", with his refusal to appear, the spirit of aggression against the rule of law that the insurrection represented. Meanwhile, in his opinion, the magistrate has declared that the sentence against the former adviser should serve to "dissuade others from committing similar crimes."

The former adviser has not made any statements during his appearance this Friday before the court, while well-known figures of American ultranationalism, such as the Republican congresswoman from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, have already declared their support for Bannon on social networks.

"I support Steve Bannon," said Greene, a declared supporter of the main lines of the MAGA ideology, 'Make America Great Again', the motto of former President Trump.
