Spain and 15 other NATO allies agree on a space network to improve surveillance and exchange of information

BRUSELAS, 16 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Spain, together with 15 other NATO allies, as well as Sweden and Finland, have agreed on a joint space initiative to establish a virtual satellite constellation that will allow better information to be collected and exchanged, with a view to facilitating the work of military missions.

The project is to put into operation a virtual constellation of both domestic and commercial space assets such as satellites and will help streamline data collection, sharing and analysis among NATO allies.

A total of 18 countries participate, of which Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States are members of NATO, while that Sweden and Finland are pending ratification.

As explained by the military organization, it is not a NATO-operated space network but rather using existing and future assets of the allies and connecting them through a virtual constellation under the umbrella of the alliance.

With this step, the participating countries seek to improve the technical efficiency and cost of this type of activity, since by doing it jointly the network will have the latest advances in commercial space technology without requiring a large investment.

In the allied headquarters they insist that Space plays an important role in the operational military domain to navigate and track forces, detect missile launches, but also to guarantee effective command and control and communications, for which they point out that this project It will therefore be relevant when taking advantage of national and commercial technologies and assets in the space domain.
