Scholz dismisses the debate on sending fighter jets to Ukraine as irrational

BERLIN/SANTIAGO DE CHILE, 30 Jan. (DPA/EP) -

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has reiterated this Sunday that he will not send combat planes to Ukraine, after kyiv's insistent requests, which he has dismissed as irrational.

"It is strange that this debate is taking place," Scholz declared at a press conference during his visit to Santiago de Chile, indicating that "a serious debate is now necessary" and not "a competition of offers, in which the reasons domestic politicians play a bigger role than support for Ukraine".

For the German chancellor, a debate on the supply of arms must focus on rational considerations, after the leader of the Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Saskia Esken, did not rule out the delivery of combat aircraft to Ukraine, reiterating that it is important "support Ukraine with what it needs."

In addition, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksei Reznikov acknowledged last week that Western fighter jets are the next item on his "wish list."

Scholz agreed this week to send 'Leopard' 2 tanks to Ukraine to bolster the Ukrainian army's capability against the Russian. The go-ahead from Berlin also includes authorizations for other countries to send the German-made tanks they have.
