Russia reopens the Crimean bridge to traffic two months after registering an explosion

MADRID, 19 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Russian authorities have reopened to traffic the Kerch bridge, an infrastructure that connects the Crimean peninsula with mainland Russia and the scene of a strong explosion at the beginning of October in the context of the war with Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Transport has confirmed this through a statement detailing that the bridge was closed to traffic due to "repair and restoration work", as reported by the TASS news agency.

The structure suffered serious damage on October 8 due to the explosion of a truck. That partial destruction of the Kerch bridge was one of the most symbolic blows against Russia since the start of its military offensive in February.

The Russian authorities blamed Ukrainian intelligence from the outset for being behind the attack, and confirmed several arrests in the framework of an investigation for alleged terrorism.

At the beginning of December, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, toured the bridge aboard a car and accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister, Marat Jusnulin, to confirm the good progress of the repair of an infrastructure of special symbolism for Moscow.

Inaugurated by Putin in 2018, it is one of the most important infrastructure works on the peninsula since its annexation in 2014 and a symbolic and practical example of the connection of this territory to Russia. The structure, 19 kilometers long, includes a rail transport track and a highway.
