Russia deploys nuclear-armed ships to Baltic for first time in 30 years, Norway says

MADRID, 14 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Russian Armed Forces have begun the deployment in the Baltic Sea of ships equipped with nuclear weapons, which is an unprecedented milestone in three decades, according to a report by the Norwegian Intelligence services, which also includes the dispatch of submarines.

These would be ships of the Northern Fleet, which at the time of the Cold War was already sailing with atomic weapons to account for the weapons potential of the former Soviet Union. Norway is not aware that modern Russia has ever resorted to this type of deployment, according to the study cited by Politico.

The Nordic country's intelligence acknowledges that Moscow "deliberately" arouses fear of a possible nuclear attack, arguing that it would be willing to use it in case it was threatened by external agents, particularly those linked to NATO -- bloc of which Norway is a part--.

These capacities also remain practically intact in a context marked by the loss of equipment and personnel as a result of the military offensive launched against Ukraine almost a year ago, according to the report released this Tuesday, which warns of a possible escalation of tensions. where the Atlantic Alliance was involved.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has verbalized the threat to use nuclear weapons, although he has always claimed that he would never act in the first place, in line with the theoretical doctrine that Moscow continues to hold today to limit their use.
