Russia accuses the US of lying for claiming Blinken and Lavrov discussed Whelan at a meeting in India

MADRID, 3 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has accused the United States of lying for claiming that Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a conversation about former US Marine Paul Whelan during their meeting in India.

"I asked Sergei if Blinken raised the Whelan issue yesterday. It turned out that the US Secretary of State did not even talk about it," he said on his Telegram profile, the TASS news agency has collected.

In this sense, Zajarova has pointed out that the statements by the Secretary of State at a press conference after the meeting, held on the sidelines of a summit of G-20 foreign ministers, are "lies". "Incredible behavior of the US Administration," she added.

Blinken assured, after the conversation, that he raised during his meeting with Lavrov "the unjust detention" of the ex-marine. "The United States has put forward a serious proposal. Moscow should accept it. We are determined to bring home Paul and all other American citizens who are wrongfully detained around the world," he said.

Whelan was sentenced by a Russian court in 2020 to 16 years in prison for espionage after being arrested in December 2018 at a Moscow hotel by agents of the Federal Security Service (FSB). According to Russian Intelligence, he was found with an external memory device containing classified information.
