Peru prepares a commission for the possible payment of "reparations" to families of those killed in the protests

MADRID, 24 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Justice of Peru, José Tello, has announced this Saturday that the Government is preparing the creation of a commission to assess the possible payment of "reparations" to the relatives of those killed in the protests registered in the country after the arrest of the former president. Pedro Castillo after he tried to dissolve Congress.

"It seems important to me that, from the justice sector, we fulfill the order of the president (Dina Boluarte) and the 'premier' (Alberto Otárola)," he said in statements to the RPP radio station. Thus, she has indicated that "a multisectoral commission is being formed to look at the issue of reparations or citizen support that we are going to give to the bereaved."

Thus, he has stressed that the objective is to "mitigate" the needs of families, although he has recognized that "human life is priceless." "It is a State response to a situation, but it must be taken into account that it is a palliative because what really should not happen (...) is that these deaths cannot be in vain," he argued.

"These people should not have died in vain. What they have to make clear to us is that this type of situation cannot happen again and above all we must not allow illegal Peru to intervene because what could have been a healthy and democratic protest ends in violence and even more, as has been shown, in violence financed by the dark side," he concluded.

To date, 30 people have died from the repression of protests in support of Castillo, which have sparked criticism of security forces and Boluarte, who took office after the former president was arrested shortly after trying to dissolve Congress to prevent a new motion of no confidence from being voted against him.
