Peru expels the Mexican ambassador "for interference in his government"

The Peruvian authorities declare the head of Mexican diplomacy persona non grata

MADRID, 21 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared the Mexican ambassador to the Andean country, Pablo Monroy, persona non grata, urging him to leave national territory within three days, alleging "interference in his government."

The Peruvian minister, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, has indicated that the Government has made this decision "due to the repeated expressions of the highest authorities of that country regarding the political situation in Peru."

"Such expressions constitute an interference in the internal affairs of the country and, therefore, are in violation of the principle of non-intervention," reads a statement from the ministerial portfolio.

Thus, Gervasi has communicated that he has delivered a diplomatic note to Monroy "through which he is notified that he has 72 hours to leave the national territory", endorsing the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, confirmed this Tuesday that some relatives of the former Peruvian president had received political asylum at the Mexican Embassy in Lima.

"The asylum has already been granted to them because they are in Mexican territory, that is, they are in our Embassy (...) It is an independent sovereign decision of Mexico," defended the person in charge of Mexican diplomacy.
