NGOs denounce a wave of attacks by settlers against Palestinians in retaliation for the attacks

MADRID, 29 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Israeli Police has raised the alert level before an increase in attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank in retaliation for attacks like the one that last Friday killed seven Israelis near a synagogue in East Jerusalem.

A Palestinian house and car were set on fire by masked individuals in the town of Turmus Ayya, on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Ramallah, and the Israeli Police suspect that they were Israelis, according to the newspaper 'The Jerusalem Post'.

Palestinian media have reported other attacks and intentional burning of vehicles at the hands of settlers in other parts of the West Bank and the Israeli NGO Yesh Din has denounced several attacks on Saturday night.

At least four cases of settlers throwing stones at Palestinians, Palestinian homes or Palestinian cars have been reported. In the Jordan Valley region, there are reports of serious damage to Palestinian greenhouses and crop fields.

The Israeli NGO Betselem has also reported that settlers have built a building on Palestinian land and attacked the owners when they arrived at the site. The settlers then set fire to Palestinian vehicles and attacked an ambulance and medical team that had arrived to treat the injured Palestinians.

The authorities' tally includes a total of 160 cases of stone-throwing in the West Bank, 85 of which correspond to attacks against Palestinians. Damage to cars has been reported in 40 of them, Israeli television N12 reports.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, asked the public yesterday not to take the law into their own hands. "We say to the citizens of Israel: do not take the law into your own hands. We are not in the era of Majteret. We have a sovereign country with an excellent Army, Government and Security Forces," he said, referring to Clandestine Jews, a Jewish terrorist organization that carried out attacks in the late 1970s and early 1980s against Palestinians.

This morning the Israeli government announced that they will strip the relatives of the terrorists of their citizenship and deny them social security benefits, reprisals that are added to the norm already in force that allows the demolition of the family residence of the terrorists.
