Netherlands summons Iranian ambassador after latest executions and alerts EU members

The Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Wopke Hoekstra, has summoned the Iranian ambassador after the last two executions of protesters and calls on the member states of the European Union to do the same.

The Dutch minister has been "dismayed" by the "horrible" executions carried out by the Government of Iran this Saturday.

"I will summon the Iranian ambassador to underline our serious concern and I ask the EU member states to do the same," Hoekstra added through a message on Twitter.

In addition, he has stated that the Netherlands already has a fourth package of sanctions in the field of Human Rights against Iran that it plans to present at the next EU Foreign Affairs Council.

"Today's actions by Iran underscore the need for an even stronger response from the EU," the minister concluded.

This reaction has been added to the international community's condemnation of the death sentence of two other demonstrators who participated in the protests for the young Mahsa Amini.

Those executed, identified as Mohamed Mehdi Karami and Mohamed Hosseini, were convicted of the death of a security guard during one of the protests in November, according to the Iranian judicial agency Mizan.

With these executions, there are now four protesters executed since the outbreak of the protests by the young Iranian Kurdish woman, which have shaken the country as it has not been seen in decades.

In this sense, the European Union has also declared itself "horrified" this weekend after hearing the news.

"The EU reiterates its firm and principled opposition to the use of the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances - cruel and inhuman punishment, which does not act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of dignity and integrity human rights", as he has made known through his foreign service.
