Machu Picchu closes indefinitely to tourism due to protests against Boluarte

MADRID, 21 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco has announced the suspension of tourist visits to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu due to the political instability linked to the protests against President Dina Boluarte.

The measure seeks to preserve the historical heritage, since the district began an indefinite strike from this Saturday, January 21. Those who have already purchased the tickets will be able to use them up to a month after the protests end and facilities will be given for the return of what has already been paid.

The Machu Picchu Interests Defense Front, calling for the indefinite strike, has announced the closure of all commercial premises in the area to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and has set up a common pot for the entire district to deal with to food shortages.

In recent days there have been violent clashes in the district of Ollantaytambo, where the train station that leads to Machu Picchu is located.

More than 2,000 tourists visited Machu Picchu every day before the protests, while the number has dropped to around 500, which is enormous damage to the region's economy.
