Israeli Police Begin Closing Tel Aviv Ahead of New Series of Protests Against Judicial Reform

MADRID, 18 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Israeli Police have begun to close the main roads of Tel Aviv before a new protest against the judicial reform that is preparing the far-right coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Tens of thousands of people are expected at the main protest on Kaplan street, according to the 'Times of Israel', against a proposal that has received harsh criticism from the opposition and from the Judiciary itself, which perceives the reform as a attack the balance of power.

International leaders such as the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Frenchman Emmanuel Macron have asked the Israeli government for caution and consensus regarding the effects of this proposal.

This Saturday, and following the trend of recent weeks, several more demonstrations are called in other cities of the country, including Jerusalem, Haifa, Herzliya and Beersheba.

The Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, went so far as to request last Sunday the temporary suspension of the parliamentary process of the judicial reform that, according to his critics, supposes the end of judicial independence, with a judiciary that would become subject to the Government and could not exercise the pertinent democratic control mechanisms.
