Israeli army kills 'armed Syrian suspect' in southern Golan Heights

MADRID, 29 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Israeli Army has killed this Sunday an "armed Syrian suspect" who was trying to cross the border in the southern Golan Heights, the Hebrew military reported in a statement.

The incident began when surveillance cameras at a checkpoint detected the presence of two armed men who had just crossed the Alpha Line, the United Nations-marked separation zone between Syria and Israel.

"The Israeli military were deployed to the scene and opened fire in accordance with standard operating procedure," according to the statement collected by the 'Times of Israel'.

One of the suspects ended up succumbing to the shots despite the medical attention provided by the Israeli forces, according to the Army. The other suspect returned to Syria, according to military sources.

The incident takes place amid an upsurge in regional tension following the two terrorist attacks that occurred on Saturday in Jerusalem, which left at least seven Israelis dead and five wounded, and led Israeli security forces to declare a state of maximum alert. .

The attacks followed a deadly raid by the Israeli army in the West Bank that killed nine Palestinians.
