Israel asks again to postpone the demolition of the Bedouin town of Khan al Ahmar, in the West Bank

MADRID, 1 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of Israel has demanded this Wednesday from the Supreme Court a new extension of the suspension of the demolition order of the Bedouin community of Jan al Ahmar, located in the West Bank and which has around 250 residents, amid Palestinian complaints about site evacuation plans.

The petition is the ninth of its kind submitted by the State of Israel to postpone the eviction of the village, located in the E1 corridor, which connects Jerusalem with the Maale Adumim settlement. The demolition of Khan al Ahmar would imply isolating East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank, which would deal a severe blow to the two-state solution.

The Israeli authorities have issued numerous demolition orders for the houses, arguing that they do not have building permits, although they have not proceeded to evacuate the place due to international pressure. In fact, 30 diplomats visited Khan al Ahmar on Monday in anticipation of the possible demolition of Khan al Amar.

The previous government of Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid tried to reach a compromise on evacuation that included a plan to move residents 500 meters away, with a gradual transfer, according to information collected by the Israeli newspaper 'Haaretz'. Several ministers of the current Executive have openly advocated for the demolition of Jan al Ahmar.

The community is made up of Jahalin Bedouins, previously displaced from their residences in the Negev desert in southern Israel. The case of Khan al Ahmar has become one of the faces of the Bedouins' struggle against the expulsion of Palestinians from Area C of the West Bank, under Israeli administrative and military control.
