Indian Police arrest two workers of the company in charge of the renovation of the collapsed bridge

MADRID, 31 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Indian Police have arrested two workers from the Oreva company, in charge of the renovation work on the suspension bridge that collapsed on Sunday in Morbi, in the state of Gurajat, where at least 141 people have died.

The arrests have taken place as the company faces various accusations of violating safety regulations and proceeding to reopen the bridge prematurely, which would have caused the tragedy.

Oreva allegedly left the technical aspects of the bridge renovation in the hands of a smaller company with an unknown track record, Devprakash Solutions, according to reports from the NDTV television network.

Thus, as the agents have indicated, the first reports suggest that Oreva proceeded to reopen the bridge earlier than planned and without having the relevant certificate from the authorities. The services of this company were hired last March and the bridge had been reopened just five days ago, on October 26.

However, the contract indicated that the bridge should be closed for at least eight months or a year to carry out the relevant maintenance work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Morbi on Tuesday as part of a three-day trip to Gujarat, where he plans to hold several election events.
