Germany rules out ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia as a way to achieve peace

The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, stated this Saturday that there will be no territorial concessions to Russia as a result of the peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, all within the framework of the Security Conference from Munich, Germany.

The person in charge of Foreign Relations has affirmed that a just peace implies that "whoever has violated territorial integrity, that is, Russia, withdraws its troops from the occupied country", in statements collected by the German news Tagesschau.

"World peace is based precisely on all of us recognizing the territorial integrity and sovereignty of each country," he stressed while at the same time pointing out that "all opportunities" should also be taken advantage of to reach an agreement.

In this way, Baerbock has affirmed that the demands of ending the war through a cession of territories is not an option: "That would mean making the population a prisoner of Russia. We will not do it."

These statements by the minister come shortly after the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, also announced at the multinational forum that Beijing is about to present a peace plan for Ukraine, in an effort to clear up the apparent " return to the mentality of the Cold War" that reigns among the world superpowers, in his opinion. This same person in charge will travel to Moscow at the end of the Munich Security Conference.

The Chinese minister has declared that his country, which has rejected the Russian invasion due to the attack it entails on Ukraine's territorial integrity, although it has never openly supported sanctions against Moscow, will always be on the side of "peace and dialogue". with a view to a "political settlement of the crisis in Ukraine".

Some 40 heads of state and government and 75 foreign and defense ministers are participating since Friday in the Security Conference in Munich (Germany), one of the main international forums of the year on foreign and security policy, in its first edition after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the dominant theme during the last days -- in particular the current protocol of international military aid to Kiev -- and with the absence of Iran and Russia, the latter country that does not have representation in the event for the first time in 20 years.
