Germany fires cybersecurity chief over ties to Russia

BERLIN, Oct. 18 (DPA/EP) -

The German Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, has dismissed the head of the federal cybersecurity agency (BSI), Arne Schoennbohm, on Tuesday for his alleged links with the Russian intelligence services.

Schoennbohm, who contributed to the creation of the BSI a decade ago, was now in the spotlight, due to his closeness to Russian circles, at a particularly delicate moment due to the growing pressure on Moscow as a result of the offensive in Ukraine.

Olaf Scholz's government considers that the suspicions had "permanently" damaged the "necessary trust" that must exist in the main person in charge of the agency, who is presumed "neutral and impartial" in the development of his work.
