Former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini dies at 65

The former Italian Foreign Minister and current President of the Council of State, Franco Frattini, died this Saturday at the age of 65 in a hospital in Rome where he was admitted for cancer, as reported by Rai.

Frattini was Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2002 and 2004 and between 2008 and 2011, both under the government of then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who has remembered him as "a true servant of the State".

"I will always remember his great ability to face complex problems with a smile, to be comfortable in each role and the esteem he has sown. I will miss him as much as all the people who were lucky enough to be able to collaborate with him," he wrote. Berlusconi on his Instagram profile.

From 2004 to 2008, Frattini was European Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security at the European Commission and his last position was that of President of the Italian Council of State, from January 2022.
