EU accuses Russia and China of blocking G20 declaration over references to Ukraine

The European Union has pointed this Friday to China and Russia as responsible for the meeting of foreign ministers of the G20 in India ending without a final joint communiqué, thus evidencing the differences that exist between the members of this forum over the war in Ukraine.

"We strongly regret that Russia and China parted ways with the consensus on paragraphs 3 and 4 of the declaration that denounce Russia's war in Ukraine, recognize the impact on the humanitarian situation and the global economy, and reiterate the importance of respecting International Law." , said the Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Nabila Massrali, at a press conference.

As he stressed, the rest of the G20 members, that is, the other 18 countries, did support the language of the joint declaration. "The EU will not support ministerial communications that do not include paragraphs 3 and 4 and we appreciate the Indian efforts on this issue," she said, referring to the temporary New Delhi presidency.

Instead of a formal communiqué, the hosts have opted for a summary text of the debates held, which states that each of the countries reiterated their respective positions in relation to the conflict unleashed a little over a year ago by the military offensive Russian.

"Most members have roundly condemned the war in Ukraine and underlined that it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy," reads the final text, in which the G20 echoes that there was " other points of view" on this same subject.

This same Friday, Beijing has avoided clarifying whether it blocked the final statement due to the discrepancies over Ukraine, but it has warned that this forum is not the appropriate one to discuss "security issues", in line with the position already expressed by Russia.
