China criticizes German politicians' trip to Taiwan

MADRID, 9 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Chinese authorities have criticized this Sunday the planned visit of German politicians to Taiwan, showing "deep dissatisfaction" and expressing their "firm opposition" to the trip.

The Chinese Embassy in Germany has indicated that this type of decision "causes a confrontation" that "takes China's policy on Taiwan out of context, if not misinterpreting it," reads a statement.

"The German side cannot have any official contact with Taiwan, and that also applies to German parliamentarians," criticizes the diplomatic office, citing the "one China" principle.

Thus, he has reiterated that "there is only one China in this world and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory." "This is a general consensus of the international community and a fundamental rule of international relations," the Embassy stated.

According to the statement from the ambassador in Berlin, the trip of a dozen politicians from the Free Democratic Party (FDP) represents a "challenge" to the "sovereignty and territorial integrity of China" by showing support for independence on the island.

However, the Embassy has added that the visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, then Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, in August, as well as the rest of "current events, make it very clear that the greatest threat to peace and stability in the Strait comes from the secessionist forces", whether they come from the island or "from another place.

"The interference of external forces and the dwindling number of separatists and their divisive activities (makes us) keep open the option of taking all necessary measures," the letter continued.

The FDP, a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's tripartite coalition, affirmed that the visit to the island is intended to send a signal of solidarity amid an escalation of tensions in the region, reports the dpa agency.

The deputy leader of the FDP, Johannes Vogel, has published this Sunday a photo on his Twitter profile with the president of the Bundestag Defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, and has sent greetings "from the plane to Taiwan".

Strack-Zimmermann has said that other parts of the world where democracy is being threatened by outside forces should not be neglected due to the intense attention paid to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the agency reports.
