Brussels congratulates Boluarte and urges respect for democratic principles in Peru

MADRID, 9 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The European Union has congratulated the new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, while urging the Peruvian authorities to respect democratic principles, after Congress dismissed Pedro Castillo after announcing the closure of Parliament and declaring a government of exception.

The diplomatic office of the EU has indicated that it "welcomes with satisfaction the peaceful and democratic way in which Peru addressed the recent internal political events."

"The EU recalls that full respect for the Constitution, democratic principles and the separation of powers, in a spirit of cooperation and constructive institutional dialogue, is crucial for the country to restore political stability and respond to the needs and aspirations of the Peruvian citizens", reads a statement from the European External Action Service.

The EU's Foreign Affairs spokesman, Pedro Stano, reiterated his support "for all efforts aimed at restoring dialogue and strengthening the rule of law."

In this sense, Stano has expressed that Brussels hopes to continue strengthening good relations with Peru, as well as working with the Peruvian authorities in shared interests that generate benefits for the citizens of both the Latin American country and the old continent.
