Bolsonaro supporters invade the Brazilian Congress to demand a coup against Lula

MADRID, 8 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Hundreds of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro have broken through the police barriers and invaded the headquarters of the Brazilian Congress in Brasilia as part of a demonstration against the new Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Some of the attendees are now heading to the presidential palace, the Planalto Palace, and to the seat of the Federal Supreme Court with the declared objective of overthrowing Lula and his vice president, Geraldo Alckmin. The Police are using riot gear, the Brazilian press reports.

The protesters had gathered this Sunday in front of the Army Headquarters, in the administrative center of Brasilia, and have marched to the Esplanade of the Ministries, where the incidents have occurred.

Those close to Bolsonaro demand the intervention of the Armed Forces and the arrest of Lula.

Previously, the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, said he had maintained contacts with the governors to address "anti-democratic acts" that have recently occurred in the country in reference to the demonstrations rejecting Lula's inauguration.

"We want the law to prevail and there are no crimes. I am in Brasilia. I hope there are no violent acts and that the Police do not have to act. The 'seizure of power' can only happen in 2026, after new elections," he argued. .
