The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has indicated that the new border measures of the United States "do not conform to the norms of refugee law," according to the agency spokesman, Boris Cheshirkov, this Friday. in Geneva.
For the UN refugee agency, the new rules would deny migrants the ability to apply for asylum in the United States if they cross from Mexico into US territory without permission.
On the other hand, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, affirmed this Thursday that thanks to the new measures, up to 30,000 people a month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela could enter the country legally if they comply with a series of requirements, including proof that they can afford a plane ticket.
In this sense, Cheshirkov has affirmed that although the UNHCR applauded the expansion of safe entry routes to the United States for some countries, these new regulations "should not prevent those forced to flee from exercising their fundamental human right to seek safety."
As reported by the agency, UNHCR is currently analyzing the new measures announced and evaluating the consequences of their application, which will allow the entry of "an unprecedented number of people" from the four aforementioned nations.
In addition, UNHCR has stressed its concern about the continuity of the controversial health regulation, known as Title 42, which allows the immediate expulsion of migrants, since the Supreme Court of the United States announced at the end of December that for health reasons said regulation will remain in force. .
"What we are reiterating is that this is not in line with refugee law standards, nor to make a link between the safe and legal pathways that have been announced and of course we welcome the expansion of the standards that On the one hand, they are accessible to some people, with the restriction of the right to request asylum for many more who are not eligible for these routes," Cheshirkov concluded.
