Biden extends for one month the declaration of disaster in Puerto Rico due to the passage of Hurricane 'Ian'

MADRID, 21 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has postponed the declaration of a disaster in Puerto Rico for another month after the passage of Hurricane 'Ian', in turn doubling the economic allocation to mitigate the consequences of the storm.

"Today, President Joe Biden has made additional disaster assistance available to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico by authorizing an increase in the level of federal funds for emergency work carried out on the ground during the period between 17 and 21 September," says a statement from the White House.

In this way, Biden has made federal funds available to hundreds of Puerto Rican localities affected by the hurricane for one more month to cover the costs of repairing houses as well as other uninsured properties.

However, the White House has once again recalled that federal funding "is also available" for the Government of Puerto Rico, as well as for local governments and certain private non-profit organizations.

Hurricane 'Ian' wreaked havoc in Puerto Rico, with at least four deaths and massive power outages, and in the Dominican Republic, where two people have lost their lives, according to local authorities.
