At least eight people have died and 16 have been injured on Monday due to the fall of a bus into a ravine in the Peruvian province of Chumbivilcas, in the department of Cusco, in the south of the country.
At around 6:30 a.m. (local time) a public transport bus fell off a cliff after leaving the road, spinning around on itself until it stopped 50 meters away, as detailed by the Cusco regional police in statements to the Andean news agency.
The incident has claimed the lives of at least eight people and injured 16 others, who have been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The bus, from the transport company Olivare, frequently covers the route from the city of Cusco to the town of Chamaca, located in the Andes mountain range. However, due to the road blockades due to the protests that are taking place throughout the country, the driver decided to take an alternative route to reach the destination, according to 'La República'.
The Peruvian Police has begun the identification of the deceased and injured. In addition, an investigation has been launched to determine what happened.
