At least 31 injured and nine arrested during the celebration of the World Cup in Buenos Aires

MADRID, 21 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

A total of 31 people have been injured and nine have been arrested during the celebration of the victory of the Argentine team in the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the city of Buenos Aires.

It is estimated that the festivities brought together more than five million people concentrated on Avenida 9 de Julio and the 25 de Mayo highway.

"On the day of the date, December 20, as a result of the operation carried out by the Emergency Medical Care System (SAME) in the center of the City of Buenos Aires and its adjacencies, the medical team provided care to 31 people, according to the last report delivered at 5:00 p.m.", according to sources from the Ministry of Health reported in the Argentine newspaper 'La Nación'.

Most of these have been treated for polytraumatisms due to falls and sharp injuries. "Of this total number of people, 16 required transfers to different Hospitals in the City, mainly the Ramos Mejía Hospital, Rivadavia, Fernández and Argerich Hospital," the aforementioned medium specified.

During the incidents, the followers assaulted a Banco Galicia ATM located between Lavalle and Cerrito streets after forcibly removing the metal shutter, an act that was recorded on television broadcasts, as reported by 'Clarín'.

The Albiceleste team and the coaching staff began the celebration tour at noon (local time) in a caravan to share the title with the fans. After the difficulties of the vehicle to advance, the players were diverted in Villa Lugano and were forced to continue the tour by helicopter.

Given the incidents, the authorities have had to evacuate the Plaza de la República where the celebrations culminated, as well as the occupants of the Obelisk. This was followed by several confrontations with rocks being thrown by fans from behind makeshift barricades. As the last cited media outlet has assured, almost an hour after the incidents, the situation seems under control in the Plaza de la República while the Police continue to guard the area.
