Israeli forces increase their presence in the area due to the upsurge in violence

MADRID, 27 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

A 25-year-old Israeli man was seriously injured Monday after being shot near the West Bank city of Jericho, an incident that Israeli forces have described as a possible "terrorist attack."

The Israeli ambulance service has indicated that the doctors have had to urgently attend to the young man, who has been transferred to the Haddasá University Hospital in Jerusalem, although no further details of the event have been released, according to information from the newspaper 'Haaretz'.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported this Monday that they plan to deploy a third battalion in the West Bank to reinforce the contingent in the area.

Thus, the new battalions will join the troops already deployed throughout the last day and given the sharp rise in violence in the West Bank, where a group of settlers carried out an attack on the town of Huwara on Sunday in retaliation for an attack in which killed two Israelis.

Generally, the IDF has thirteen battalions deployed in the area. During the last year, this number has fluctuated in the framework of a series of anti-terrorist operations launched by the Israeli forces, so that in October there were 26 battalions in the area, a number that subsequently decreased.
