400 people sentenced to prison terms for their participation in the protests in Tehran

MADRID, 13 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Iranian authorities have affirmed this Tuesday that a total of 400 people have been sentenced for their participation in the protests that have been going on for nearly three months due to the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.

The general prosecutor of Tehran province, Ali al Qasimehr, has indicated that 160 people have been sentenced to between five and ten years in prison, while another 80 have been sentenced to between two and five years in prison.

Likewise, it has detailed that another 160 people have received sentences of up to two years, while 70 have been fined for their role in "riots", according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim. Various NGOs have denounced the arrest of thousands of people in the context of the protests.

To date, the Iranian authorities have executed two people convicted for their role in the demonstrations, sparking criticism from the international community, which has called on Tehran to commute these sentences and end the repression of the demonstrations.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard recently confirmed that more than 300 people have died since the start of the protests, which was the first official balance since the start of the mobilizations over the death of Amini, a member of the Iranian Kurdish minority. The figure is lower than that provided by the NGO, which points to more than 400 deaths due to the repression by the security forces.
