Turull on the CJEU: "There are many of us who are part of an objectively identifiable group"

BARCELONA, 31 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The General Secretary of Junts, Jordi Turull, has expressed his support for former Minister Lluís Puig after the ruling of the High Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU): "There are many of us who are part of an objectively identifiable group. We call each other and we are Catalan independentists".

It has done so through a tweet collected by Europa Press after the European Justice has concluded that Belgium cannot deny the extradition of the leaders of the 'procés' without demonstrating that there is a "founded" risk for the accused.

However, the CJEU points out some exceptions, such as "the risk of not having a fair trial regarding an identified group of people is demonstrated", and to which Turull has referred.

The CJEU ruling responds to the preliminary rulings sent by the Supreme Court magistrate Pablo Llarena in March 2021 after the Belgian Justice refused to hand over Puig on the grounds that the competent court to request his extradition should be the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) and that if delivered in Spain, fundamental rights such as the presumption of innocence could be put at risk.

The European Justice points out that Belgium "cannot refuse, in principle, to execute an arrest and surrender order based on the lack of competence" of the issuing body and opens the door to new Euro-orders against the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont and the former ministers .
