Jouruvá highlights the training received by jurists in Spain against gender violence: It is "absolutely necessary"

The president of the CGPJ also praises the "excellent training" of the judges and asks to pursue the objective of "zero victims"

MADRID, 29 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The vice-president of the European Commission in charge of Values and Transparency, Vera Jourová, highlighted on Tuesday the training received by members of the Judicial Career in Spain, and which in her opinion is "absolutely necessary" to fight against sexist violence.

Jourová expressed herself in this way in a video broadcast during the award ceremony of the XVII Awards of the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence, which she took the opportunity to thank for the award that the president of the organization, Ángeles Carmona, has awarded to Jourová herself for her involvement in the fight against gender violence.

In a press release, collected by Europa Press, the Observatory has indicated that the Vice President of the European Commission has described as "essential" and "exemplary" the work carried out by the body based in the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) .

On the other hand, Jouruvá has also made an appeal to the situation that women are experiencing in Ukraine as a result of the war and has taken the opportunity to explain the content of the proposed directive within the European Commission to combat violence against women. In her opinion, it constitutes "the first instrument of the Union that addresses this type of violence in a comprehensive manner."

The proposal includes "raising violence against women to the level of a crime", an initiative that, according to the vice-president of the Commission, "complements itself with existing crimes in the Member States".

Other measures are aimed at improving "prevention, protection of the victim and support in access to Justice and coordination between the authorities". The purpose of the proposal, Jourová stated, is to ensure early detection of situations of violence to prevent more femicides from occurring.

The vice-president of the European Commission has also advocated for the unity of all the actors involved in the fight against gender violence and for a comprehensive approach, "from all angles", of this "shameful phenomenon".

In his opinion, one of the most important areas is the one that concerns Justice, which is why "it is absolutely necessary that the Administration of Justice, as well as the members of the Judiciary, be well prepared to deal with this abominable phenomenon. ".

In his closing speech at the awards ceremony, the president of the CGPJ, Rafael Mozo, highlighted the importance of all measures aimed at preventing violence against women in order to achieve the goal of "zero victims" and, among them , education in equality both in the classroom and in families from childhood.

In relation to the actions of the Justice, Mozo has highlighted the need for its response to gender violence to be firm and effective and has praised the commitment assumed by the more than five thousand Spanish judges, as well as their "excellent training". in the matter.

It has also considered the help and accompaniment of female victims "essential", whose objective is for each of them to feel "that they receive the real support of the institutions so that they remain firm in their decision to denounce". For this, she has pointed out, it is key to maintain the efforts of the different administrations in the provision of material and human resources for this purpose.

In this context, Mozo has recalled the signing of the State Pact in 2017 as one of the most important milestones in the fight against gender violence and has advocated for the "immediate implementation of some of the measures still pending development".

Lastly, the president of the CGPJ thanked the winners -which in this edition have been the Spanish Association of Women Judges, the Provincial Coordination Commissions against Violence against Women and the prosecutor Gracia Rodríguez Velasco- for their involvement and commitment and for his perseverance in spreading essential values such as equality, respect, freedom and justice.

For her part, the member of the CGPJ and president of the Observatory, Ángeles Carmona, highlighted the pioneering role that Spain plays in all areas of the fight against sexist violence. In her opinion, this is due, among other reasons, to the work carried out by the institution that she presides over its twenty years of existence.

This work, he added, has contributed to improving the tools available to the different Administrations to deal with violence against women through the preparation of studies and analysis with scientific rigor, the promotion of the specialization of the Criminal Courts, the creation of exclusive Courts for Violence against Women grouping two or more judicial districts or the updating of protocols and coordination between institutions, among others.

Finally, Carmona has insisted on the rigorous and solid training of the members of the Judicial Career and has encouraged women not to be silent, to denounce and to continue trusting the institutions.
