Zelensky thanks Johnson for his support of Ukraine

MADRID, 7 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has thanked the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, for the "resolute support" given in recent months to the Ukrainian authorities and people to face the Russian invasion.

Both leaders have had a telephone conversation on the same day that Johnson has announced that he will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Conservative Party. "You're a hero, everyone loves you," Johnson told Zelensky, according to Downing Street.

The British 'premier' has assured his ally that the support for Ukraine is shared by the different parties in the United Kingdom and will continue with or without him in Downing Street, also in the field of Defense.

Johnson, in fact, has included words about Ukraine in his farewell address to the nation, in which he has assured that "the British people will continue to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom for as long as necessary".

Echoes of Johnson's resignation have also reached Moscow, although the Kremlin has avoided assessing the news directly. The presidential spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, has however assumed that Johnson "does not like" the Russians and that this discomfort is reciprocal, reports the TASS news agency.

Looking to the future, Peskov hopes that "one day" there will be "professionals" in the British government capable of engaging in dialogue to solve problems. "However, this possibility is still slim," he said.
