Zelensky says he is "very happy" about Johnson's continuation as UK prime minister

The Ukrainian president regrets that the sanctions on Russia "have not influenced him"

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, said on Tuesday that he felt "very happy" that Boris Johnson remained the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after the internal motion of censure held by his party on Monday afternoon.

During an event organized by the 'Financial Times' newspaper, the Ukrainian president has expressed that he is glad that Johnson survived the motion and has indicated that the British 'premier' is a "true friend of Ukraine".

For him it is "great news" since, as he has stated, he considers Johnson and the United Kingdom "great allies", especially in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Likewise, he has described the armed conflict that the country is going through as a "war for the country's independence and freedom" and has stated that "stagnation is not an option for Ukrainians".

"Ukraine must take control of all its territory. We have already lost too many people to lose the country," said the Ukrainian president, who has once again insisted on the need to continue sending them weapons.

"We are inferior in terms of equipment and therefore we are not able to advance. We are going to suffer more losses and people are my priority," said Zelensky, for whom "victory must be achieved on the battlefield."

However, he has left the door open to a possible negotiation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to whom some of the decisions of kyiv's allies are benefiting during this war.

Thus, he lamented that the sanctions imposed by the Western powers "have not really influenced the Russian position" and criticized the fact that some of his partners are trying to help Ukraine while trying not to excessively weaken the companies that are under those restrictions.

"Everyone is acting in code. They are supporting Ukraine but also checking what can be done to weaken the sanctions so that companies do not suffer. How can we achieve a ceasefire on Ukrainian territory without listening to our position? This is very amazing," he protested.
