Zelensky is confident that Ukraine will resist "as long as necessary" until it receives the requested weapons

MADRID, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has conveyed his confidence that the country's Armed Forces will resist "as long as necessary" until they receive the weapons requested from the Western powers.

However, in an interview for the German newspaper 'Zeit', Zelenski once again stressed the importance of having the necessary weapons as soon as possible to reduce casualties in the Ukrainian ranks.

In this sense, the president has valued the resistance of the Ukrainian Army to the offensive launched by Russia more than 110 days ago, and has once again recalled that they are not only defending Ukraine, but the whole of the European continent.

"It is smarter for everyone in Europe to help us now so that we don't have to defend other nations later," said the head of state, who clarified that he is not asking for "more than is necessary to protect freedom."

"To some, my demand may seem like endless repetition, but I have to say it over and over again: We need modern weapons. We need support to survive and win. And the less willing our partners are to help us with weapons, the longer this war will last and more people will die," he warned.

At this point, he pointed out that if it were possible to buy the necessary weapons directly, Ukraine would not have to spend entire weeks and months negotiating with its partners. In addition, he considers that there is an "imbalance" of forces compared to Russia, something that is costing the lives of many of his fellow citizens.

Specifically, Zelenski has sent a message to the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, whom he has criticized that the arms supplies from Germany are "less than they could be". "If we got all the modern weapons that we ask from our partners, we could save a lot of lives," he has said.

On the other hand, it has stressed that Ukraine aspires to recover its positions prior to the 2014 Crimean war, thus recovering the Black Sea peninsula and the Donetsk and Lugansk regions in Donbas.

Finally, he has shown his willingness to sit at the table with Russia to negotiate the end of the war, although he has questioned the possibility of peace when "Russia is not ready for peace." In this sense, he has questioned Moscow's promises that it will not take advantage of Odessa's demining efforts to attack the area.
