Zelensky "firmly" trusts that the European Union will grant the status of candidate to Ukraine

MADRID, 22 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has said he "firmly" hopes that the European Union will finally grant candidate status to Ukraine, a decision that will be resolved on Thursday.

"I firmly believe that in these crucial days, Ukraine will receive the status of a candidate for membership of the European Union. We have been at this for a long time," said Zelensky, who pointed out that the granting of the status would be a "very important moment" in the country history.

Likewise, the Ukrainian head of state has pointed out that if the Twenty-seven support the candidacy, this will be a great motivational boost for the country's soldiers in the context of the war with Russia, started by Moscow almost four months ago.

"A great motivation for unification and, therefore, a great motivation for the victory of Ukraine," Zelensky pointed out during a telematic intervention before students from Canadian universities, according to the Ukrinform agency.

The heads of state and government of the European Union will give this Thursday in Brussels their formal approval to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for accession to the EU, although they will make it clear that the following steps to complete the process of entering the community club will depend on the country's "own merits" in fulfilling the reforms that Brussels "assumes" kyiv will complete before contemplating opening negotiations.
