Zapatero visits Nicolás Maduro in Caracas

MADRID, 4 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, held a meeting this Monday with the former president of the Government of Spain José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero at the Miraflores Palace, located in Caracas.

The meeting took place after Zapatero participated in a forum where he welcomed the fact that the United States is holding talks with the Venezuelan Government, while expressing his support for Venezuela's participation in the peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN), according to the Venezuelan Executive in a statement.

In this sense, the former Spanish president has affirmed that "getting the guerrilla group to renounce violence is a great objective" that will benefit citizens of both Colombia and Venezuela, especially on the common border, since it would cause "other violence to be reduce or disappear.

Zapatero has played a prominent role in the dialogue processes between the opposition and the Venezuelan government, reiterating that the only way to resolve the conflict is through dialogue.

Since 2015, he has closely followed the dialogue processes in Venezuela and on November 21, 2021, he was in the country as an international observer in the Venezuelan local and regional elections.

"I want the dialogue to recover after the elections. Democracy is a continuous dialogue," Zapatero stressed when referring to the negotiations in Mexico between the government and the opposition under the auspices of Norway, suspended in October 2021, as detailed the Venezuelan government.
