Verstappen takes advantage of the Ferrari debacle and the help of 'Checo' and leads Montmeló

Sainz and Alonso finish fourth and ninth

MADRID, 22 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Dutch driver Max Verstappen (Red Bull) has achieved victory this Sunday in the Spanish Grand Prix race, the sixth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, after the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was forced to leave due to mechanical problems , and rises to the championship lead, while the Spaniards Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) and Fernando Alonso (Alpine) have finished fourth and ninth, respectively.

Leclerc, Saturday's poleman, dominated the race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with a firm hand when, on lap 28, he began to experience power problems in his car and had to retire. The Mexican Sergio Pérez was in the lead after overtaking the surprising George Russell (Mercedes), but a radio 'suggestion' from his team paved the way for Verstappen to take the lead and sign his fourth victory of the course.

With this, 'Mad Max' snatches the leadership of the overall drivers' World Championship from Leclerc. In addition, Red Bull culminates the appointment in Montmeló in the best way with the double of its drivers thanks to the second place of 'Checo', while Russell completed the podium and led the improvement of Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton fifth after being overtaken by Sainz on the penultimate lap.

The man from Madrid, for his part, saved a day that started in the worst way; he started third, but a bad start made him lose two positions and a spin in the first few laps weighed him down to eleventh place. Even so, he did not give up and climbed to fourth place in the final.

Meanwhile, Alonso started from the bottom of the grid, twentieth, after changing the power unit of his Alpine and managed to climb back to the points zone, taking two points thanks to his ninth place.
