Unzué dedicates the chupinazo of the Sanfermines to health workers and ALS patients

PAMPLONA, 6 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The ex-soccer player and ex-coach from Navarre Juan Carlos Unzué dedicated this Wednesday the chupinazo with which the Sanfermines 2022 festival was inaugurated in Pamplona to the health workers who have worked in recent years to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and to the sick, such as he, from ELA.

"This chupinazo is dedicated to all the health workers and the people who have helped us throughout the pandemic. It is also dedicated to all the patients with ALS, especially Moncho. Long live San Fermín! Gora San Fermín!" said Unzué before lighting the fuse of the chupinazo on the balcony of the Pamplona City Hall.

Unzué was accompanied by the mayor of Pamplona, Enrique Maya, with whom he shared the traditional 'Pamplonesas, pamploneses. Long live San Fermin. Gora San Fermin'.

Since he made it public in 2020 that he suffered from ALS, Unzué has become a benchmark in raising awareness and fighting this disease, starring in campaigns, talks, documentaries and books in which he recounts in first person his coexistence with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Unzué confessed that being the protagonist of the chupinazo is "a pride and a privilege." "Because there are not many people who have been able to live this moment and some of them have let me know and have answered that you have to live it, you cannot explain what you feel. I hope it will be a very special day, not only for me, but for all my colleagues, that they feel represented by me and what is going to entail throwing the chupinazo is also giving visibility to ALS, which is my goal in life right now, "he said.

Unzué played more than 300 games in LaLiga Santander. He debuted in goal for Osasuna in the First Division in the 1986-87 season. It was the start of a professional career that led him to also play for FC Barcelona, Sevilla FC, CD Tenerife and Real Oviedo.

As a footballer, he has a European Cup Winners' Cup and a Copa del Rey to his name, won with FC Barcelona in 1989 and 1990, respectively. Already on the bench, he trained CD Numancia and Racing de Santander. Between 2013 and 2017 he formed a tandem with Luis Enrique and was second coach with him at RC Celta de Vigo and FC Barcelona, achieving a Champions League, two Leagues, three Copas del Rey, a Club World Cup or a European Super Cup with the Blaugrana . After that stage, already as head coach, he managed RC Celta de Vigo and Girona FC.
