Ukraine will offer energy exports to Germany to alleviate Russian dependence

kyiv/BERLIN, 3 Sep. (DPA/EP) -

Ukraine plans to support Germany by supplying it with Ukrainian energy with the aim of limiting Berlin's dependence on Russian energy imports.

"Currently Ukraine exports its electricity to Moldova, Romania, Slovakia and Poland. But we are ready to expand our exports to Germany," Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told DPA.

Shmyhal has assured that he will discuss this measure with the German authorities during his visit to Berlin this weekend, since they have "enough electricity in Ukraine thanks to nuclear power plants."

The Ukrainian authorities consider that increasing exports to countries dependent on Russian gas is a win-win measure for both parties. "The European Union would get more energy and we would get the foreign exchange that we urgently need," he declared.

Energy consumption in Ukraine has fallen sharply since the invasion by Russian troops on February 24, due to the mass exodus of the Ukrainian population and economic decline. This has freed up additional capacity that can be used for exports to other countries.

Shmyhal is scheduled to arrive in Berlin on Saturday, then on Sunday he will meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
