Turkey studies sending soldiers to Qatar to increase security during the World Cup

ISTANBUL, Oct. 2 (DPA/EP) -

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has asked Parliament for authorization to send troops to Qatar to increase security during the World Cup being held this winter in the Arab country.

Qatar has requested security support and in response Erdogan has sent a letter to Parliament, controlled by related parties, to authorize this deployment, reports the official Turkish news agency, Anatolia.

Qatar expects more than a million visitors and has requested this help to defuse threats, including "terrorist" threats, according to Erdogan's letter.

The Turkish president has defended this "exceptional cooperation" and has recalled the "historical and cultural ties" with Qatar, as well as the interest in improving stability in the Persian Gulf region.

Turkey already has a military base in Qatar, as well as a bilateral protocol published this summer in the Turkish Official Gazette for the deployment of riot police, bomb squads and police dogs during the World Cup, which takes place between November 21 and December 18 th.

The Turkish Ministry of the Interior has estimated that more than 3,000 Turkish riot police will be sent to Qatar.
